While this review will be mostly opinionated, I would like to point out first and foremost the lie that is the claim that this is "A full movie split into 9 parts!". This statement is simply not true. At best, these are 6 scripts turned into mini-movies, and thrown together under one title. While you could say that they make references to each other with the MK tournament and such, bear in mind that this is part of the lore. Nothing else is tying these episodes together. Now I know there is a Season 2, and they are making a season 3, but what you get here with these 9 episodes is not much. No bigger underlying story or motivations besides what each character is up against. Jax and Sonas ordeal with Kano has no correlation to Kitana, or Scorpion. Example: In the first two episodes, Kano sells cybernetic parts to the Lin Quei and gets his cybernetic eye. When he shows up in episode 9, his face is full human, but they are still making robots. Is this in the past, before the first episode? Why have it out of order like this? Why can't you tell us? Why is Kitana/Mileenas story mostly artwork? WHY ARE THE CREDITS 2 MINUTES LONG?!? Anyway... Do you love Mortal Kombat? Have you been a fan your whole life? Do you want to see a modern take on all your favorite characters? Then, sadly, I must tell you that this isn't it. I remember watching this on Youtube a few years ago. First there was a 10 minute trailer, which I wasn't a big fan of due to their attempt to make the backstories super realistic and super gritty. Reptile was a harlequin-baby that grew up to eat heads, and Baraka was a serial killer who did surgery on himself. Then they made these short films, and while they toned down a lot of the super-realism, it didn't quite jive with me. I remember thinking that it was a nice fan film endeavor, but not much more. Now, with the release of Mortal Kombat X on the horizon, steam adds these videos. I understand that this is to get more hype for the game, but the story here, and the story presented in the games themselves, are so utterly different that I am shocked. I would definetely recommend the games story over this. In MK9 we got an idea of every character, the basic story, and how they all came together. And while I want to call this a prequel, I can't do that either. In the Raiden episode, he spends 90 days in a straightjacket before he gets an icepick lobotomy and dies. Then he just pops back up alive in Chinatown and strolls along. And while the basic premise was ok, there are glaring issues. If he is the God of Thunder and Protector of Earthrealm, why is he so weak he gets beat up by two fat guards and made null by a straightjacket? He absorbs the electricity from the tasers, but there is no teleportation or lightning powers used at all. He spends the entire episode being beaten up and powerless. And the worst part is, the episode GOES OUT OF ITS WAY TO TELL YOU THAT THIS EPISODE IS THE CLOSEST TO THE DIRECTORS VISION FOR MORTAL KOMBAT THAN ANY OTHER EPISODE. What????? In conclusion, if you want to watch several fan films about Mortal Kombat that are well done with decent acting but lack any well written scripts or loyalty to the established lore, then watch these. But while I am ok with people reimagining certain franchises with their own twist, this is so far off base that its a wonder why this is getting so many good reviews. Highly recomend checking these out if youre a fan of mortal kombat. each of them is a small story in itself. they go together as a set but can be watched in any order. I really enjoyed these as a die hard fan. its hard to be objective ;). good show I recommend this 100!. Thought it was a free to play MK while browsing market. Got my hopes up. :c
